First Watermelon
I look forward to the first watermelon of the season, because I have forgotten the first of last year. Once again the first one I bought had spent to much time in a hot truck from a warmer climate and was overripe. Not spoiled but within a day.
Not a total loss since I hacked it up and put it out for the night critters. Not the birds so much as the deer, groundhogs, possums, rabbits and others. Within one night all the red flesh was totally devoured. Certainly I got my $5 worth.
I also recalled that I no longer have a decent knife to cut watermelon . The first one was left somewhere. The second one disappeared from the house, and no medium length sharp knife has even been able to do the job since. They all curve ad make he slices uneven.
Possibly watermelon is a thing of the past for us. I refuse to buy the little precut chunks in cups. Maybe I should move on to cantalope, a much smaller melon to slice and serve.
