You are right in so many ways but of course there is the fact that so few of Americans really are reading today. They barely read beyond headlines really. We are becoming a very small group as readers. I used to donate a lot of books as well to the library and I've worked in one so I know that they can't keep every single book. Still I don't look for the short books much anymore. I want a full on story and yes I do use Audible and Kindle but big books don't bother me at all whether in print or on audio. I look for quality of the writer and it can be just about any genre. I do hate the fact that authors die and so often so do the books they wrote. I mourn every time I finish a great book because I know that story won't be out there forever.

I don't care much about immortality in this world. I just hate to see my stories and characters die with me.
